Service and maintenance contract for eBus charging infrastructure

In this way, the municipal utilities in Bonn benefit from the OMNIplus CHARGE service technicians

With OMNIplus CHARGE, the municipal utilities in Bonn have not only electrified their depot, they have also opted for the right service and maintenance contract for the charging infrastructure. Sascha Keller explains that there are good reasons for this. On his assignment in the former German capital, the service technician also shows us what matters most in his work: know-how, communication and speed.

At a glance: the service and maintenance contract for charging infrastructure from OMNIplus CHARGE

Who is the offer for?
To all municipalities and transport companies implementing a new charging infrastructure with OMNIplus CHARGE.

What are the included performances?
The contract covers two areas of performance:

  • Maintenance: All components are checked within the framework of regular maintenance appointments - in each case in accordance with the intervals required by the manufacturer.
  • Repairs: In the event of a technical malfunction, the OMNIplus CHARGE service hotline can be reached around the clock. In the first step, an attempt is made to solve the problem remotely. If this is not possible, a service technician sets off.

In an emergency, how fast are the OMNIplus CHARGE service technicians on site for repairs?
Within 24 or 48 hours - depending on how the contract is structured.

Electrified for eMobility
Sascha Keller covers hundreds of kilometres every month for his customers. No problem for the 31-year-old, as he enjoys exchanging ideas with his colleagues on the road about current projects and learnings. In addition, you can clearly see in the conversation: the expert for high-voltage technology and DC charging infrastructure (charging with direct current) is almost electrified by his job. He likes his work and the contact with his customers - and, on the other hand, he is appreciated for his commitment and expertise.

“In an emergency, I will be with the customer within 24 or 48 hours - depending on the contract.”

Always with him: Sascha Keller’s company car, a rolling workshop, packed with special tools that he needs on site at the customer’s premises. The OMNIplus CHARGE service technicians are deployed throughout Germany. Sascha Keller and his colleagues divide it up by region. He is mainly on the road in southern Germany. But when it matters, it also covers longer distances. “This depends on the capacity utilisation in the team or the urgency,” says the charging infrastructure expert.

In addition to maintenance, he and his colleagues also take care of repairs and emergencies. In these cases, the service technicians are at the customer’s site as quickly as possible.

In maintenance work at the municipal utilities in Bonn
Today, during the visit to Bonn, one of the regular maintenance appointments is due. Depending on the component, these take place at intervals of three, six, nine and twelve months, as well as after three and six years. A general overhaul is also carried out after twelve years. This time, the pantographs are lubricated, which are used to charge buses with a current collector on the roof. To ensure that all mechanical parts function correctly, this is done every three months.

These regular appointments are part of the service and maintenance contract concluded by the municipal utilities over five years. The decision for this all-round carefree package was made as part of the construction of the new charging infrastructure by Daimler Buses Solutions at the Friesdorf depot in the south of Bonn.

The maintenance assignment starts with the selection of the necessary tools. From the multimeter to the adapter case to the first-aid kit - Sascha Keller has everything he needs to be perfectly equipped for every task.
An integral part of the service and maintenance contract for charging infrastructure: inspection and maintenance of the central components. This also includes the diagnosis of the chargers, which Sascha Keller connects to the laptop.
The journey continues at an airy elevation - with lubrication and function testing of the mechanical components of the eight pantographs in total.
Finally, the two charging plugs with CCS2 plug connection need to be checked. It’s quick to see: everything is in the green range!

Many components, one contact person
Simon Böss, one of the two project engineers responsible at Stadtwerke Bonn, explains the main reason. He would like a contact person whom he can contact in the event of a problem and ask to be on site within a short time. “We don't have it for our existing chargers,” says Böss. Instead, the project engineers had to contact each individual manufacturer in the event of malfunctions and start troubleshooting. His colleague Timo Nebel describes the main problem: “We lacked any fundamental basis for demanding response times or fixed delivery times for replacement parts.”

With OMNIplus CHARGE and the new charging infrastructure, this should change - the solution: the service and maintenance contract. “If problems occur, we can contact the hotline,” says Simon Böss happily, “and as agreed in the contract, the error will be rectified within 24 hours.”

Sometimes it’s even faster, as minor faults can usually be resolved remotely. Sascha Keller and his colleagues only step out if this attempt is unsuccessful.

Training courses “with system”
Another advantage of the service and maintenance contract is the system approach of OMNIplus CHARGE: When building charging infrastructure, Mercedes-Benz uses tried-and-tested chargers from partner companies. Sascha Keller and his colleagues receive individual training for each of these components. In addition, there are regular safety briefings. "This means that we are up to date. We also always have the latest power tools and measuring devices," says Keller proudly.

The holistic path to eMobility
The example of Stadtwerke Bonn proves the added value of the service and maintenance contract for charging infrastructure in practice: whether in the event of a malfunction or during regular maintenance appointments - with service technicians such as Sascha Keller, transport operators are guaranteed expertise and reliability. This makes the offer an important component of the holistic approach of OMNIplus CHARGE: it not only includes the planning and construction of charging infrastructure, but also the long-term and partnership-based support of customers in daily operations.
